School Profile

Cadiz Viejo National High School is a government secondary school located at the heart of Barangay Cadiz Viejo and offers a complete four-year secondary education under the 2010 Basic Education Curriculum for the First and Second Year Levels and the Revised Basic Education Curriculum for the Third and Fourth Year Levels.

          Cadiz Viejo National High School came into existence by virtue of resolution passed by the Brgy. Council initiated by the late Brgy. Captain Eleuterio C. Templado Sr. in 1970. The enactment law of Republic Act No. 6054, otherwise known as the barrio High School Charter, passed the way to the opening of this Cadiz Viejo Brgy. High School. The school operated initially with three female teachers, 85 enrollees, 60 of whom were First year and 25 were Second year students, on June 16, 1970. Four years after, it offered the full and complete secondary curriculum.

In its initial operation, the school was placed under the supervision of the Department of Education, Culture & Sports with its budget 70% was funded by the City government of Cadiz and the remaining 30% appropriated by the National Treasury through the DECS. Through Republic Act No. 6655 better known as the Free Secondary Act of 1988, the school funding requirement were wholly supported by the Department of Education, Culture & Sports under the supervision of Cadiz City. Finally, Cadiz Viejo National High School has its financial autonomy in 1993 as a Newly Nationalized High School through the power of the Decentralization Act.
         
The school has produced its first batch of graduates in 1970. CVNHS had grown its population to 893 students with an annex school that was opened named Sicaba National High School. The opening of this aforementioned school is a positive development taken by the Local Government & Department of Education in providing access for students of school age to free secondary education. The annex school was then separated on October 2002.
         
Strategically, Cadiz Viejo National High School is located in the remote area of Cadiz City, Negros Occidental with a distance of 15 kilometers away from the Dep. Ed. Division of Cadiz City. The barangay is not so much accessible to transportation that students have to walk with a certain distance towards school. Majority of the residents rely on farming and fishing as a means of livelihood. With this condition, education will play a crucial role not only in improving the future of the school’s clientele but of the community as well. The school has 19 personnel headed by the Secondary Principal. It has a total student of 407 as of school year 2011 - 2012 and a class size of 11 in a maximum number of 50.

With the total enrolment 0f 399 this school year 2012 – 2013, the school is operating under three curricula which are the 2002 Basic Education Curriculum for the Fourth Year, the 2010 Basic Education Curriculum for the Third and second Year Levels and the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum for the First Year or Grade 7 Level. The students need to pass the following subject areas under these curricula:

B. COMMUNITY

Cadiz Viejo is a coastal Barangay of Cadiz City with a total land area (proper) of 1, 685.15 hectares. Seven sitios comprise the barangay with a total population of 5, 465. It is 16 kilometers away from Cadiz City proper and 6 kilometers away from the National Highway that is in Crossing Martesan. The barangay road been completely concreted.

The barangay is bounded by Guimaras Strait on north, Brgy. Sicaba on the east, Brgy. Burgos on the west and the municipality of Manapla on the southern portion. Motor cabs and tricycles are mostly the means of transportation used by transporters of the products to Cadiz and bringing in goods to the barangay.

Cadiz Viejo has the facilities that serve as channels in catering the needs of the residents both in the proper and the component sitios.

It has a complete elementary school and secondary school. Day Care Centers are likewise available in the barangay proper and selected sitios to attend the needs of the preschoolers. At the heart of the barangay positions the plaza within which are the Brgy. Hall, a basketball court, stage for cultural presentations and the mini market which also serves as the multi-purpose for all barangay gatherings. Alongside the basketball court is the Health Center. Two churches stood in the barangay. One is a Baptist and the other for the Roman Catholic devotees. A temporary seaport serves the needs of both local and foreign tourists who visit and experience the world-class accommodations of Lakawon resort through motorized banca or pump boats. Sari-sari and mini-grocery stores sprout all over the barangay that sell goods from the basic to fuels.

Culturally, the people of Brgy. Cadiz Viejo is breed of rich heritage. One distinctive feature of a Viejo-anon is the dialect they use. As most of the families are of Boholano descendants, the stress of their speech is something melodious. Its uniqueness is solitary in the whole of Cadiz. Converse with a Viejo-anon and without a singer, you will hear a dialogue with a tune.
